Induction motors normally operate at constant rates approaching synchronous speed. However, some induction motor applications require adjustable speeds in order to meet inconstant load requirements. Variable speeds require a motor speed control system. Adjustable speed operation saves energy, an advantage over full speed operations in which valves and dampers function to throttle the motor.
Motors may use external devices to convert rated speed to load speed, so drive type is an important issue to consider when selecting a motor.
