In response to the need for greater energy efficiency, the lighting industry
designed fluorescent lamps that produce nearly as much light as a standard
fluorescent lamp, but use about 15% less energy. For example, a standard 40-watt
F40 fluorescent lamps can be replaced by a 34-watt F40 lamp.
The energy saving lamps operate the same way as standard fluorescent lamps, but employ a more sensitive phosphor coating. Most of the lamp manufacturers offer energy efficient fluorescent lamps; GE produces the "Watt Miser" lamp, Philips offers the "Econo-watt", and Osram Sylvania makes the "Super Saver" lamp. These energy efficient lamps are offered in a variety of shapes and sizes but mostly in the common lamp types..
