Modifying the light level, or changing the amount of light produced by a
system or fixture, can be done by changing the type or quantity of lamps used,
changing the type or quantity of fixtures, or by adding new controls and associated
equipment. In any case, illumination levels should not be adjusted at all if a
change may result in lowered productivity, safety or security. Before
adjusting illumination levels, therefore, determine the level of illumination needed,
and then conduct a lighting survey to identify the levels that are currently
being provided. This survey can be performed quickly and easily by using a
standard light meter, and following the manufacturer's instructions for use. The
condition of lamps, fixtures, and room surfaces also should be evaluated.
In areas with overall high lighting levels, consider installing desk lamps and other types of low wattage task lights for close work at desks, drafting tables, product assembly areas. These provide light when and where it is needed and may permit ceiling lighting to be decreased.
If you are planning a remodeling project, use a light color when repainting. Dark colors are poor choices for large areas if you want to keep your lighting bills down. The higher reflectiveness of a light color may enable you to reduce the number of lamps you need in the area, so you can remove some lamps or go to lower wattages.
